Clematis
Clematis Culture: Clematis need a location with at least 5-6 hours of good sunlight. Some varieties thrive in less. Clematis roots are
long and deep and like it cool and damp, but not soggy. They prefer a light weight mulch around their base to moderate temperature.
When planting loosen the soil to a depth of 2 feet, mix the soil with peat moss and well-rotted manure. Failure to do so may result in a
stunted plant that may never reach its potential. Plant your clematis so it is 1-2 deeper than the original soil level of the pot. Pruning your
clematis down to 12 inches after the 1st year will result in a bushier plant. Clematis appreciate an organic balanced fertilizer in early spring as buds swell. Avoid non-organic foods as clematis resent elemental nitrogen standing around the roots, usually causing outright death of
young plants.
