If the pH is high, it is also good to incorporate some sulfur with the amended soil. Soils found around house foundations tend to have a very high ph. Mulching 2-3 inches deep will help accommodate their sensitive root system. Be careful not to overwater or underwater and spend an extra couple seconds to evaluate the water needs. Japanese Maples resent being under-watered. Also, if the soil has too high of a moisture content for too long it is detrimental. Maintaining a fine balance, especially while the plant is getting established, is necessary for the plants survival and well being. As they become more established, they tolerate some drought, although supplemental watering is recommended, especially to avoid scorching on the lace leaf varieties.

A one time a year application of slow release balanced fertilizer should be applied in the early spring. Avoid fertilizing after early May.
