 1. Maintain uniform soil moisture by mulching and proper watering.
2. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizer or large quantities of fresh manure.
3. Plant in well-drained soil.
4. If soil is salty, provide more water with each watering to help leach salts through the soil.
5. Within 1 foot of the plant, do not cultivate deeper than 1 inch.
6. Your soil may be deficient in calcium. In the autumn test pH and if below 6.5 add lime. If 6.5 or above add gypsum.
7. For an immediate remedy apply Bonide Rot Stop. This will help to correct calcium deficiency. It can also be used to correct the same condition on cucumbers, melons and peppers.
