Mulching
(All items subject to availability)

Keep the mulch moist, but not soggy to prevent future problems of this mold.  If mold is already a problem, the best thing to do is to rake out the mulch into a heap, water it thoroughly and then let it generate heat.  Excessive heat will kill the mold, and then it can be reapplied.

Mulch used in the winter for protection should be removed in the spring.  During this time, it is helpful to rake the mulch down to the decomposing area to keep a barrier from forming. Choosing the right mulch depends on what you plan to do with the mulch.  Certain plants will benefit more from different types of mulches.  Such as Azaleas like acid soil and would benefit from pine mulches.  So choose mulch that most benefits your plants and your needs.  When mulching newly planted trees, the mulch circle should be two to three times the size of the hole in diameter.  Established trees, a six-foot diameter is recommended.  Remember not to pile the mulch up to the trunk.  Follow these practices and your mulching experience should be rewarding.
